Our story

A note from the parents

We have private insurance, but insurance doesn't cover everything. In less than a month of treatment and hospitalizations we already passed 30,000 dollars, of which we paid around 10,000 out of pocket. From there, we wait for the insurer to reimburse what it sees fit. That's how it works, and you need capital to cover costs first and then wait.

We did everything we could to cover the start. We're an independent family that lives off its work, and we keep going to get ahead: we're an architect and a multimedia producer, and we haven't stopped working in our own fields to support Renato. That's why, beyond asking for support, we built this tool — it helps us, and we want it to help other families too.

The treatment is projected to last about two years. The prognosis is positive, but we have to be realistic: medicines, transport, expenses. Each stage has a different level and, with barely a month in, we've already used up savings and credit. That's why we're turning to this.

We're not setting a cap because we still don't have a concrete projection. We've already used the last available credit card, and that debt now accrues interest; we have no room left to cover the next steps of the treatment. On top of that come expenses an ordinary home wouldn't have: here the cleaning has to be deep, with constant disinfection, and that's paid too. Meanwhile, at least one of us must always be caring for Renato, so we can't double our income the way this situation would demand. We face it with positivity and courage. Renato shows us what he's capable of: he's our motivation, and we have to stay strong for him.

How Reno began

Reno was born from something very personal: the family who created it is also walking through their son's treatment. Faced with everything a diagnosis brings — information, appointments, expenses — they needed a way to organize it and share it with the people around them. Reno is that tool, built from first-hand experience, and today it aims to serve other families who need it too.

GoFundMe (coming soon)

We haven't activated it yet: for now we prefer to channel support through this platform, with full transparency and no fees. We'll create it later to have that option available.

Important note about GoFundMe

This GoFundMe campaign is managed in the United States by a family member on Renato's behalf.

GoFundMe is a secure and convenient option for international donations, especially for donors in the United States. However, it may not be the fastest option for urgent medical expenses.

GoFundMe deducts a transaction fee from each donation: in the United States this is typically 2.9% + $0.30 per donation. Donors may also see an optional contribution to GoFundMe during checkout, which is not required.

Bank transfers from GoFundMe may take time: setting up and verifying withdrawals can take up to 7 business days or longer, and once sent, funds may take an additional 2–5 business days to arrive.

For urgent or time-sensitive support, direct bank transfer, Wise, PayPal, or crypto may provide faster access to funds.

All funds received through GoFundMe will be used to support Renato's medical treatment and related expenses.

One day at a time, together

Renato is 7 years old. He's curious, brave, and has a smile that's contagious. A few months ago he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and since then his life and our whole family's revolves around his treatment. Every check-up and every day at home is a step we take together.

Renato was recently diagnosed with leukemia, which is a blood cancer. The type he has is B-ALL (B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). It is the most common type found in children and, thankfully, it is highly treatable and his prognosis is very positive. However, there is a long journey to remission: he has already received 2 blood transfusions and platelets, and will require weekly chemo treatments for the next two years.

The treatment is long and divided into stages over roughly two years. There are good days and hard days, and we take them one at a time, with hope.

Renato misses school and playing with his friends. To protect his immune system, in-person visits are limited, so he's become quite the Nintendo Switch expert to get through the days. He's available to play online with cousins and friends who'd like to keep him company for a while.
